New English Dictionary on Historical Principles, cuyo nombre pasaría a ser en 1879
Oxford English Dictionary. Se dedicó a esta labor con una energía e inventiva que llegarían a ser legendarias. El primer volumen apareció en 1884 y hacia el día de su muerte había terminado casi la mitad del diccionario.
